Patty Bell has the tools to get you looking your best! She’s one of the most sought after makeup artists in Pittsburgh. She’s been called the “unofficial” makeup artist to the Pittsburgh Steelers because of her work with Steelers TV for the past 10 years.

She’s also worked with Samuel L. Jackson, Kate Walsh, Lance Armstrong and many more celebrities.

She’s broken into a highly competitive field with ease and is living her dream!

Introduce yourself and business as if you were speaking from the cockpit:
Good morning ladies and gents. This is your captain, film and television makeup artist, Patty Bell, and owner of On Location Makeup, speaking to you from the movie set, Elixir, where I am working as key makeup artist. I will be flying here for the next 23 days. Sit back and enjoy a wild ride in the fast-paced world of television movie making… it’s lights, glamour and lashes in this ABC family musical.

When did you earn your wings?
I’ve been a makeup artist since 1986 where I got my first pair of wings on a commercial with director, Glenn Pryzborski. My agent, Deb Docherty plucked me out of the department store and gave me my first job with Hartwick/Przyborski.

My career took off after that and I eventually got into the New York hair and makeup union in 1990, (thanks to my friend, Paula Pappas) and assisted on my first film, Iron Maze.

20+ films later and thousands of commercials and videos later, I’m still going strong and loving the ride where every day is a new adventure.

If you could name a nail polish color after yourself or your business, what would it be?
It would be called:
“Not A Shrinking Violet”…Aptly named for my first grade teacher who told my mom that she didn’t have time for…shrinking violets, aka, me;)

This color is for all those late blooming violets, who shine brightly in all their glory and make the world a more beautiful place.
It’s a sparkling, vibrant violet—fun and calming, magically enhancing whomever it touches.

Not all flights are smooth. Tell us about how you handle turbulence in your business.
Being freelance offers its share of turbulence as a makeup artist, as you are basically on call 24/7, always awaiting your next job. There are only so many jobs to go around in an over-saturated, highly competitive market.

The key to survival is learning how to get through the slow periods, which is why I do a little bit of everything: print, film, TV, video, sports, brides…Pittsburgh is a town that can offer a wide variety of makeup jobs and a great place to start.

Looking back, the people that were the toughest on me in the beginning of my career, made me who I am today, and have taught me: patience, strength and professionalism, and to always put your best work out there, no matter what.

Who is the wind beneath your wings?
My mom is the wind beneath my wings and has always been my biggest supporter, fan and confidante…I don’t know what I would do without her.

Advice to other women as they navigate the business world?
Women need to support each other instead of knocking each other down.

Success doesn’t happen overnight…you have to earn your wings in this business and never stop learning or volunteering your time or skills to help those in need.

More often than not, your attitude and professionalism is what gets you hired and re-hired in this business, so be kind and nice to everyone you meet along the way, as they could be your boss someday!

And most of all, be positive, check your ego at the door and be open to any opportunity that comes your way.

It has been quite a journey and we are so lucky to live in a city known for having some of the top experts in their field right here in Pittsburgh.

I asked a panel of experts what they thought:
What can women over 40 do to look "sexy"?

What common mistakes should they avoid that might make them end up looking "silly"?
The answers I received were amazing! Here's the advice they had to give:
#1 - Give the Girls a Boost! Like the rest of the body, breasts change as we age, yet women will continue buying the same bra size for years. Have your size measured by a professional at your local lingerie or department store. You'll be surprised how much slimmer and younger you will look with proper support and shaping. After you are certain of your correct size, treat yourself to a new 'under-wardrobe' of lace and loveliness. It will be your secret weapon. #2 - Nurture Your Inner Vixen
Get out of your sweats and t-shirts and put on some sexy lingerie for yourself -- or your partner. There is nothing hotter than a matching bra and panty, or a pair of thigh high stockings. Putting on a pair of sexy panties under a dull business suit or your pair of favorite jeans gives you a feeling of mystery, power, and a little rebelliousness!

#3 - Less is More!
Lighten up on the foundation and powder. Nothing ages a women more than heavy pancake makeup that settles into the fine lines and wrinkles.Switch to a tinted moisturizer to add a nice dewey glow to the skin and only powder the nose if needed.No one should ever see your foundation- it should be used sparingly to even out your skin.

#4 - Don't be Afraid of Mascara!
It instantly opens your eyes and makes them look bigger! A navy mascara makes the whites of your eyes, pop!Add an extra coat for a little more pizzazz and concentrate on the outer corners to add a sexy cat eye, or add a few individual lashes, by Ardell for that extra Hollywood glamour.

#5 - Concealer is Your Best Friend!
No woman should ever go without under eye concealer. It instantly brightens the eyes and takes years off.Look for shades that have a yellow undertones to take away the purpleness under the eyes, and always apply after your foundation.

#6 - Have a Crush on Blush! As we age, our skin becomes dull and lackluster, but with a nice flush of blush on the apples of the cheeks, you can instantly brighten your complexion and look alive! I like Milani's Luminous blush for a nice, healthy glow- it's a beautiful pinky coral shade with gold highlights that looks great on everyone.

#7 - Swap your lipstick, for Lipgloss!
Don't be afraid to add a little sparkle to your life- toss out your dark winter shades and lighten your lip color for spring with a sparkly gloss to give you a younger, fresher look, guaranteed to take years off. Your lips will look fuller and sexier, especially at night.

#8 - Avoid the sun, embrace sunglasses!
While it seems contradictory to both avoid the sun and to embrace sunglasses while in the sun, we all know its impossible to completely avoid sunshine. If you do go in the sun, glop a high SPF all over your face and neck and wear sunglasses. Crows Feet are the quickest way to give away your age. The sun, married with squinting in the sun, will bring them on prematurely. So, you may not only look your age, but you may appear older. While a tan makes us all look good, being the hottest 80 year old in the home is essential when looking to date as an octogenarian. Follow this tip and reap the rewards as you gracefully age.

#9 - Sexiness is an inside job. While a hot body, perfect features, and trendy clothes in general say "sexy," that all loses its appeal when you see someone is shallow. Conversely, people who are imperfect in their appearance but are fulfilled in their self-expression radiate confidence (Mick Jagger) and a love of life. #10 - Get the raw glow! Your skin will shine and you'll look fine on a diet rich in raw foods. The omega-3 fats from walnuts, chia seeds, hemp seeds, flax seeds and small oily fish are the best single thing you can do to prevent and reduce wrinkles. #11 - Look and feel bulletproof The key to being sexy starts with thinking you are sexy. A great place to start is committing to looking "bulletproof" every time you go out. #12 - Just a Hint is All You Need Less eyeshadow, less red lipstick, less low cut blouse and less short short skirts. Just above the knee and a hint of that gorgeous cleavage, nude color lips and neutral tones are all ultra sexy. don't try too hard either. #14 - Green Juice to Hydrate Your Skin
To keep your facial skin super sexy and glowing, start your morning off with an ultra cook, alkalizing cucumber juice! The Beauty of Life: First Look Fridays: Makeup Artist Patty Bell

From the Pittsburgh Steelers to the upcoming movie The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Pittsburgh-based makeup artist Patty Bell has a pretty hectic schedule. She's also one of the sweetest people you could hope to come across! Read on to discover her favorite blush, the makeup brush she thinks everyone needs in their makeup kit, and so much more.

Can you tell me a bit about yourself?
I was born and raised in Pittsburgh and graduated from the Pittsburgh Beauty Academy as a licensed cosmetician. I have been working as a print, film and television makeup artist since 1986 and love every minute of it! I'm currently working as key makeup artist on the film The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

How did you first become interested in makeup, and what led you to become a makeup artist?
Makeup artistry kind of found me! In high school, I could always draw portraits and also did some modeling. That combination, plus the love of fashion, makeup and photography, has made me who I am today. Right after high school graduation, I went to modeling school and it was there that I knew that I really loved makeup. I soon began doing all of my friends, read every book that I could by my idol, Way Bandy, and then my next door neighbor hired me to be a makeup artist for Ralph Lauren cosmetics. After working for years in the department stores, I got "discovered" by my agent, who hired me on my first commercial. My career took off after that, and I eventually got into the hair and makeup union out of New York, IATSE #798.

I am best known for doing natural beauty makeup and makeup for sporting events, having worked for Fox Sports and the Pittsburgh Steelers for 10 years.

What are some of the moments that stand out as highlights in your career?
Wow, so many highlights after so many years...being nominated by my peers as Pittsburgh's Master makeup artist was pretty cool, as well as landing my first national magazine cover and my first film.

Working for television shows such as: The Young and the Restless, Monday Night Football, Versus and NBC Sports is always fun, as well as national campaigns for American Eagle, Levi's and Rue 21.

I also got to star in Makeover Pittsburgh last year, and travel to Novia Scotia to work with NHL's Sidney Crosby, which I loved!

I am very blessed to live in a small/big town with so many amazing opportunities and work with so many legends!

What are your top 5 favorite products?

1) Have a makeup lesson at least once it in your life -- the right makeup application can make you look years younger and take 10 years off your life! Don't be afraid to try something new ... it's only makeup, it washes off!

2) ALWAYS use a sunscreen, and AVOID tanning beds at all costs! Make sure your foundation has a sunscreen in it. Using makeup does have its advantages, as foundation really does prevent premature aging and skin cancer.

3) An eyeliner brush is the one makeup brush everyone should have! Seal your eyeliner with eyeshadow to prevent smearing.

Being a makeup artist must be fun -- but what do you do in your spare time?

In my "spare" time, I love being at home with my two teenage boys, and my two collies! I also enjoy spending time with friends, shopping, music, photography, reading, writing and being outdoors.

Pittsburgh is home to many talented artists, some I can even call my friends...but on one occasion, I had the distinct pleasure and honor to work with one of the very best...world renowned, pop artist Burton Morris.
We were invited into his Penn Hills studio to film him painting the iconic Eat 'N Park Smiley Cookie! Burton was commissioned to paint the world famous cookie for the 25th anniversary celebration in June.

As an artist myself, watching him paint was such a treat, as it has always been my dream to own one of his paintings, but I got something even better...Burton signed prints for everyone on the film crew and autographed his coffee table book for each of us as well!
What a kind, generous man and a really fun shoot to be a part of!

Word of mouth is often the best advertising for a business, not only because its free, but because it spreads like wildfire, something Patty Bell knows very well. Some people (including this MANIAC) might say Patty is living the dream: she employs her friends, works with celebrities and models, and gets to make people pretty- as her job.
Patty has been a makeup artist for the past 20 years in the film, television, and photography industries. After a friend of hers starting giving her name out to another group of friends, Patty started to receive calls asking for her mastery of skills and know-how to be put to use for their parties and weddings. The word spread quickly about Patty and her team of makeup experts and suddenly On Location Hair and Makeup, her business, was in high demand for everyone’s special day. Getting started and growing a customer base was only the beginning, though. Patty says that determination, passion, hard work, and professionalism are all keys to running a successful business. As for being her own boss? “I love being able to pick and choose my clients, and setting my own hours,” Patty says.

Patty Bell got her start doing make-up for parties and brides, and continued to the celebrity and fashion worlds.
And Patty picks and chooses the best. Her clients range from sports stars, models, politicians, and brides. She works with every girl’s dream man, a.k.a. Sidney Crosby, on a regular basis (she calls him “her buddy”), but also divulges that she’s worked with Drew Carrey, Amy Adams, Tommy Lee, and even Samuel L. Jackson. She’s been working with the Steeler’s for ten years and claims that’s where her loyalty is.
Although born and raised in Pittsburgh, where the snow is abundant and unavoidable, Patty admits she’s anti-snow, claiming that she’s “seen enough” throughout her life. Even though makeup is her forte, Patty knows all about style in general; her favorite designers include Dolce and Gabbana and Roberto Cavalli. When she reaches into her makeup bag, though, she goes for a plethora of different brands. Her favorites are Dior, Urban Decay, and MAC but Patty admits that she really just loves all makeup. Her favorite trends right now are matte lips, flushed cheeks, and, of course, perfectly flawless skin. As far as fashion goes, she’s partial to the bohemian rock star look.

Penguins star Center Sidney Crosby is just one of the many celebrities Patty Bell has worked with.
“Less is more,” says Patty when asked for basic daytime and office style tips. Leading her clients away from an often committed (and amateur) mistake of too many colors and focal points, Patty suggests that women keep their look simple, but still elegant and classy. This can be achieved by wearing neutrals with a pop of color and a single, great accessory.
She suggests similar guidelines for makeup, “Clean skin, neutral shadows, a rosy cheek, and natural lip color goes a long way in the office.” She adds that its best to keep the perfume to a minimum. “I hate to see women over do their wardrobe and their makeup routine for daytime/work- save the glitz & glam for evening,” she says. And if you’re almost scared of the makeup brush for fear of destroying a good thing (like this MANIAC blogger is), you can find refuge in Patty’s words to live by: Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.

What a spectacular wedding to be a part of, and a picture perfect day for Brooke and Nate's wedding last Saturday, 6/12/2010.
My day began at Brookes' parents beautiful home in Sewickley, Pa.. where the bride and her bridesmaids all got ready. Dr. Barber and his wife were quite the hosts!
Her ceremony was at Heinz Chapel in Oakland, with guests such as: Jeff Reed, Bob Pompeani, Jamie Dixon, and Larry Fitzgerald in attendance, and then on to the Carnegie Museum for one of the most elegant receptions I have ever seen.

Our first Friday wedding of the year was with our beautiful bride Kyla and her husband, Dr. Jeremy Jumbach.
They were wed in Shadyside at the First Presbyterian church, with the reception to follow immediately at the Carnegie Museum...one of the most elegant places in all of Pittsburgh for wedding parties.

Brooke's gown was absolutely breathtaking and was from Anne Gregory for the Bride, in Mt. Lebanon, Pa.

Lori and friends kicked off our wedding season with a bang on May 29, 2010. We all had so much fun, and they instantly made me feel right at home in Eighty Four, Pa.!

The day began, as Lori's bridesmaids, (Cathy and Rebecca) and I, toasted to her new life with a sparkling glass of Dom Perignon, some beautiful music playing in the background, her doggy, Bunny Lou running around with her pink bows on, and a lovely lunch complete with my favorite...fresh brewed iced tea!

Once again, it was quite an honor to be a part of South Fayette High School's, Arts, Humanities & Communications Career Fair on 3/25/2010.
I truly love sharing my knowledge of the makeup industry with so many aspiring teenagers.
My main piece of advice- get your beauty license while still in high school...the more you know, the more you're worth!

20 Questions...with Sumer Schmitt, owner of Simply Perfect Weddings

Continuing my quest in honoring successful women business owners, I now bring you, Sumer Schmitt, wedding planner extraordinaire, and all around great gal!
I have had the privilege to work along side with Sumer on many weddings and she is like a breath of fresh air, bringing a young, fresh approach to the ever growing world of wedding planning....
Meet Sumer!

20 questions with Sumer Schmitt, wedding planner and owner of Simply Perfect Weddings.  

1. OL-First of all...what does a wedding planner do?

SS-This can vary depending upon what the client hires us to do; however, since most of our clients hire us for full-service wedding planning, I’ll speak to our all-inclusive planning services. Starting with the very first consultation, we are with the bride every step of the way assisting with everything from budget preparation, vendor recommendations, etiquette advisement, to accompanying the bride to her final gown fitting. This sounds cliché, but we can assist with as little, or as much as the client needs. Every client is different; therefore, we tailor our services to what the client is looking for.   

2. OL-Why does a bride "need" a wedding planner?

SS-The average wedding can take 200+ hours to plan and execute. Many couples today do not have the time to devote to coordinating the hundreds of details that go into planning their wedding day. A professional planner will provide expertise in order to successfully plan and execute an event from start to finish; they will also provide knowledge and advice on the latest wedding trends and proper etiquette. Personally speaking, 99% of my clients are either busy professionals, or are planning from out of town, and need to rely on a wedding planner to be their eyes and ears when they can’t be present for meetings. Since this is my full-time job, I am available to meet/speak with vendors during the middle of the day, when my clients are not. Whether they just need a simple question answered, or need a complicated problem solved, we’re there to take care of it right away. When my clients arrive home at night, all of the “leg work” is already done for them, and they have all of the information they need right in their inbox!

  3. OL- What made you decide to become a wedding planner? Why brides?!

SS-Simply put, I am passionate about helping people plan the biggest day of their lives!   

4. OL-Describe your typical day!

SS- Well, that varies greatly depending upon the time of year! During “planning season”, most of my time is spent in my home office on my computer. At any given moment throughout the day, you’ll either find me answering emails, making phone calls, looking over contracts, writing blog posts, and other various office activities. On days that I schedule appointments, my iPhone is my best friend! Some days I will have meetings with clients and vendors that will require me to be on the road for 8+ hours. During “wedding season” my days get a whole lot more interesting! I’m running errands for clients, conducting final venue “walk-thru’s”, coordinating rehearsals, and on the day of an event or wedding, I’m spending 12+ hours running the show! My life never gets boring, that’s for sure!  

5. OL-You are a newlywed, how did you and your husband meet and...did you plan your own wedding?!

SS-My husband and I actually met online if you can believe it! We met during my senior year of college, and were engaged a year and a half later! I was just starting my business at the time; therefore, I chose to plan my own wedding. We opted for a fairly simple and intimate dinner reception atop Mt. Washington here in Pittsburgh. 

 6. OL- Have you ever played match maker, too?! 
SS-I actually have! Although, I haven’t played “traditional” match maker in quite some time, I do encourage my single friends to give online dating a try! I get asked a lot of questions about how online dating works, and am more than happy to give advice when asked. I think online dating is a great alternative to meeting people if the “bar scene” isn’t necessarily your thing.

 7. OL-Tell us about your business and being a young, successful entrepreneur...how did you get started?

SS-Throughout college I would plan events for my university and local businesses. I never realized at the time that I could make a career out of event planning, so I went on to pursue my degree in business management and finance. After a few years in the finance field, I just knew it wasn’t for me. I’ve always had a passion for events, and after beginning the planning of my own wedding in the fall of 2007, I became quite disappointed with the level of customer service I received from various vendors (rest assured though, I ended up hiring some fabulous vendors in the end). It was at that time that I realized I wanted to do my part to change the wedding planning process, and alas, Simply Perfect Weddings was born, and we’ve been going strong ever since!  

8. OL-What advice do you have for young women wanting their own business?

SS-Find out what motivates you, and don’t look back! Be sure to understand the building blocks of running a business before opening up shop – write your business plan, look into tax laws, draw up a solid contract, and put an accounting/record keeping process into place. I know these tasks may seem mundane at first glance, but things like these are crucial elements to the success of owning a business. Don’t forget to DREAM BIG, and never stop learning!   

9. OL- How do you handle the nervous brides & their families?

SS-Being a wedding planner is definitely more than just pretty designs and logistics. Sometimes you have to play “psychologist” as well. If I have a bride who is nervous or stressed in any way, it’s important for me to understand what is going on inside. Most of the time, they are feeling just minor nerves or “butterflies”; and while I don’t have a perfectly crafted speech, one goal remains the same…at the end of the day no matter what happens, everything always works out. It’s easy for brides to get caught up in the stress of linen colors, cake flavors, and how they want their bridesmaid’s hair to look, but it’s important for brides to focus on the end result…the marriage. After all, that is the #1 reason for the day!   

10. OL-Are there really "Bridezillas" out there?! What do you think of that show?

SS-Personally, I don’t watch it. I have seen a few episodes, but feel that most of what is seen on TV is fabricated for the “shock value”. I can honestly say that in my 2+ years of business, I have yet to have a “Bridezilla” as a client!   
OL...note, my friend worked a few episodes of Bridezilla & they wanted the girls to fight, she even was made to provoke the girls to fight! It's all about ratings!

11. OL-What was one of your most memorable weddings that you planned?

SS-That’s a tough question to answer, because every single wedding I’ve ever planned has a special place in my heart (truthfully!). I’ve planned such a variety of weddings…everything from elaborate, formal affairs to country chic themed weddings that have taken place in renovated barns. If I had to choose just one though, I would say Kelly & Phil’s wedding that took place last July at the Pennsylvanian. Such a great couple, with a team of truly talented vendors!  

 12. OL-What is your favorite type of wedding to plan?

SS-Now this is an easy one! My favorite type of wedding to plan is one that the couple completely personalizes to reflect THEIR personality and style. I love unique weddings where the bride and groom aren’t afraid to try new things and really focus on infusing their personalities into the event.

  13. OL-What accomplishment are you most proud of?

SS-There have been quite a few accomplishments I’ve achieved along the way that I have been proud of, but my #1 accomplishment is every time I walk away from a wedding with a happy couple!   

14. OL-When you are not planning a wedding, what are you favorite things to do?

SS-I love working out and traveling! Staying fit is an important part of my lifestyle; therefore, I try my best to work out at least 5-6 days a week. In my down time, I love weekend getaways with my husband. We both work a ton of hours; therefore, any chance we get to travel is welcomed!   

15. OL-Where is your dream destination?!

SS- I’d have to say Italy or Greece! I am fascinated by Europe, and hope to have the chance to visit Italy or Greece one day soon. I’d also LOVE to plan a Europe destination wedding for a client! Fingers crossed that I will have the chance to one day!   

16. OL-Where do you see your company in five years?

SS-In five years, I plan to continue to grow Simply Perfect Weddings beyond a boutique firm. I hope to have an associate planner working along side of me, so we can accommodate more than one wedding per weekend. I would also love to expand the business to include destination weddings as well!

  17. OL-You give such a fresh, energetic approach to the wedding business...do you stay in touch with your brides even after the wedding?

SS-Absolutely! One of my favorite aspects of my job is building relationships with my clients. I always love to hear how they are adjusting to married life after the wedding. I stay in touch with many of them via email and Facebook, and always welcome a lunch or coffee date!   

18. OL-Who are some of your favorite vendors to work with?

SS-I have been incredibly fortunate to have worked with some truly talented vendors here in Pittsburgh, and quite honestly have SO many favorites (too many to list)! Here is just a very small sampling of a few of my favorites:

 19. OL-Do you believe in love at first sight, and happily ever after?!

SS-Hmm…I’m not sure about “love at first sight”, but I definitely believe in “happily ever after”!   

20. OL-And finally, you've seen so many brides...what advice can you give to keep the love alive in a marriage?

SS-Communication is key! It’s also important to keep things fun – plan a “date night” at least 2-3 times per month. It’s not always necessary to go out for a fancy dinner…movie night at home can be just as fun! Take walks together, hold hands, and remember to say “I love you” often!

20 Questions...with Dr. Michael Huwe, creator of Obsessed Minerals Cosmetics

In my journeys, I have the priveledge to meet so many wonderful, and fascinating people, and most recently, I had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Michael Huwe, creator of Obsessed Minerals Cosmetics.
I am in awe of successful women and support women owned businesses whenever I can and encourage you to do so as well, especially those made in my hometown!

I fell in love with Michaels' shadows the minute I saw them! The colors are vibrant, sparkling and just plain beautiful, so I just had to ask her a few questions, because inquiring makeup minds and lovers want to know!
Who is this woman behind the Minerals?!

20 questions with Dr. Michael Huwe - creator of Obsessed Minerals cosmetics

1. How did you get the name Michael?!
mh- My mother named me for her father, her favorite cousin, and her favorite nun.

2. You started your career as a chiropractor...why the switch to makeup?!
mh- I've always been obsessed with makeup, I have had the biggest collection of all my friends for as long as I can remember...then one day someone suggested I start my own line. With my background in natural medicine, I thought it would be a good idea to keep this in mind and create a line staying as close to natural as possible, but still enough great pizazz to be worn on the runway!

3. How is Obsessed Minerals different than all the other mineral makeups?
mh- Most mineral makeup is loose or baked...which is either difficult for the average woman to apply, or comes off very dry leaving very little color behind. Obsessed Minerals is pressed with ingredients which allow the full pigmentation to come through, as well as, maintain the look for the enitre day! In addition to the great color payoff, Obsessed Minerals' specialty is the wide color choices which include incredible color undertones found with no other manufacturer. I strive to come up with unique makeup giving eveyone an individualized look.

4. What is your vision for your company?
mh- My dream is to become the leading creator of dramatic color and the number one choice of makeup artists! Hopefully, Obsessed Minerals will eventually be found in all great makeup stores!

5. Have any celebrities been wearing your makeup?! If so, who?!!
mh- This is a great question....and the answer is yes....however, Obsessed Minerals has been tested and used by some of the biggest name celebrity makeup artists...who are under contract to other companies. This makes it difficult for me to name names as I don't want to violate any contracts. That being said, Obsessed Minerals was mentioned in Glamour Magazine's online site, Glamour.com with this article:
Also, be sure to check out Glady's Magazine...a great magazine for women who are breaking into the modeling industry. Obsessed Minerals made their editors choice, as well as, their #4 makeup product! Although the issue doesn't state that the cover model wore my shadows, the owner/editor told me that Kim Alexis was wearing Obsessed Minerals and loved it! For those who are familiar with celebrity makeup artists, Obsessed Minerals found a friend with Ve Neill, who loves our shadows and uses them frequently!

6. What are your personal favorites in your line?
mh- I have so many favorites....my absolute obsession would be the eye shadows! I am constantly looking to create new awesome colors that no one else has. I love adding iridescence and sparkle. I also adore the lipsticks....it has taken a long time to create a great formula that looks great and feels good on. My foundations are sweet...incredible coverage, yet you feel as though you have nothing on! I can't forget my awesome lip glaze! They are beautiful and infused with peppermint oil, which is a natural lip plumper! I will tell you this....I don't offer anything that I won't personally wear or am proud to sell. So, it's hard to choose any one thing, as I love them all!

7. What's it like in your makeup lab?!
mh- Right now my makeup lab needs reorganized! It's actually difficult to get in the door! We built the lab before we realized how much room would be needed. I have stacking bins full of containers, a hydraulic press, and tons of shelves full of containers of my 660+ concoctions! Not to mention multiple types of heating equipment, a chair for company, a television for those long days, and boxes for containers that have no home.

8. If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 items would you have?
mh- Hmmmm. Toothpaste! Oh, do you mean makeup? I would have to have eye liner, lipstick, and mascara. I think with those three items you can still pull off a look. If I could add a fourth I would take my foundation...but I could survive without it!

9. Who is your dream celebrity to endorse your makeup?
mh- Wow! That's a tough one! It would depend on who I was targeting....for the young I would have to go with Taylor Swift or Rhianna. For ladies my age and older....either Oprah or Sarah Jessica Parker.

10. Where can we find Obsessed Minerals?
mh- We are in several Pittsburgh locations: Huwe Chiropractic in Bridgeville, The Nutrition Shop in Wexford, The Southpointe Spa and Salon in Canonsburg, and Bangz in Bridgeville. 11. When you're not creating makeup, what are you doing?
mh- I still practice Chiropractic one day a week, I maintain all the book work for our Chiropractic office, I teach Pathophysiology for DeVry University, and I have three kids ages 8, 12, and 15...all of which are very active in sports, I am their chauffeur, which is in itself a full time job.

12. How did you start your own company?
mh- Actually, this is the second company I've started, the first being our Chiropractic office. I learned the first time around that there are always people to ask if you don't know how to do something. So I did a lot of research as to what went into various types of makeup, bought ingredients, started mixing things up in my den and pushing my trials on my friends. I took their opinions and worked to change whatever was negative. One of my close friends then offered to have a makeup party for me before I started pressing out my powders, which was very successful. I took any money I made from selling my start-up products and kept putting it back into the business. I bought more containers and more ingredients. My friends had more parties for me. This continued until I managed to aquire the equipment I needed to create more professional looking products and build a lab to keep the ingredients in a sterile environment. I did cheat a bit and use some credit cards, but have worked very hard not to go into debt with this project. As, I continued, it occurred to me to get professional advice about the quality of my shadows, specifically, as they are my most favorite thing. So I emailed various celebrity makeup artists and started sending out samples. This is what has led me to where I am this far.

13. Any advice to aspiring entrepreneurs?
mh- Utilize the internet! The best tool I have used is researching the internet for everything! LinkedIn is one of the best sites out there! Another entrepreneur turned me on to it at a chance meeting at the post office....that was a lucky break! You can find anyone you want if you look hard enough and most are friendly enough to drop you a return note and give you some advice on how to acheive your goals! I have found buyers for the majority of the stores that I am interested in breaking into through this site. My other advise is don't take any pay for yourself until you are well established...therefore you need other income while you are starting. Take every dime that you've made and put it back into your new business. Network your business with everyone! You never know who might be able to help you.....everyone know's someone....who might know someone else....who might be able to help you!

14. Where do you get your inspirations for your palettes?
mh- Sometimes I see someone on TV who has a great color combo going on, so I slip into the lab and put the colors together. Sometimes I put things together to go with an outfit I plan to wear and think it's something others would love. Believe it or not, I think about colors all the time...I even dream about them! Sometimes my best ideas come when I'm either sleeping or about to fall asleep.

15. Who is your favorite makeup artist?
mh- I have several, locally I adore Patty Bell and Bethany Montecalvo, Hollywood wise, I really like Sam Fine, Ve Neill, Patty Dubrof, Mai Quynh, Lizbeth Williamson, and Lorrie Turk.

16. Besides Obsessed Minerals, do you have any other favorite makeup lines?
mh- I have so many favorites....here is my list: MAC, Makeup Forever, Too Faced, Nars, Urban Decay, but of course my number one is my one line....I never thought that I would love the quality and colors more then those previously listed, but I do!

17. Is your makeup green & cruelty free?
mh- Obsessed Minerals is made with the finest, natural ingredients...especially if you stick with the loose products. When you get into the pressed, you have to add in an anti-microbial, and a mineral oil substitute. However, these items are still much more kind to the skin then the harsh chemicals used in the usual brands. Ironically, mineral oil is a natural oil that is non-harmful, yet, people are afraid of it due to it being a petroleum derivative....so cosmetic companies steer away from using it, hence the mineral oil substitute. As far as the cruelty free question, our cosmetics are in no way tested on any animals other than myself, my friends, and occassionally my children!

18. Who inspires you?
mh- So many people, but, mainly my husband! He is the most encouraging, open and optimistic person I know. He always backs my "crazy" ideas and is constantly working for my benefit and to help me succeed.....From a professional stand point I would have to go with Jerrod Blandino (makeup artist founded Too Faced Cosmetics), Mary Kay Ash (needs no introduction) and Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo (founders of MAC).

19. What's in your makeup bag?
mh- Bag? Ha! Two drawers! When I say I'm "obsessed" with makeup, it's a severe understatement! I have always had a huge collection of makeup, primarily eye shadow. Now that I have my own cosmetic company, I have so many things that it actually takes two large drawers and some of my countertop to hold all of my favorites! BUT, if you mean what do I take with me when I leave....I only take lipstick! The eye shadow never needs re-applied, the only reason I need lipstick is when I eat it often diminishes...so I like to re-fresh.

20. What are your hopes and goals for 2010?
mh- This is the year I want to break into mainstream retail! I am in the process of finding eye catching packaging and working on getting approval from some of the best buyers in the industry! Hopefully before the year ends, you will see Obsessed Minerals on the shelf of your favorite store :)

From Frumpy to Fabulous in just minutes!

Recently I was interviewed by author, Elizabeth Donovan, M.A. and offered some advice for moms on how to look their very best.
Making up moms is one of my favorite subjects, as I have done many mom makeovers, and as a working wife and mother of two boys, I know all too well, the sleepless nights & stress filled days!
Below is a reprint of the article from Parenting Pink web site...enjoy and thank you, Elizabeth!

As moms, we are warriors of daily chicken nugget battles, dirty diaper duty, running tactical night time nursing missions, soldiering on as we run our 10th carpool of the evening, and manning the position as CEO of everything from drool to teenage drama. It’s no wonder that we often lose ourselves in a fashion abyss of over-sized sweat pants, Adidas sneakers, and forgo any signs that we used to wear make-up.
But just because we are busy moms, doesn’t mean we have to completely let ourselves go, does it? According to Patty Bell, a film and television make-up artist, absolutely not: “Time is crucial to moms, and sometimes adding just a touch of makeup can instantly take you from frumpy to fabulous in an instant.” Bell has transformed many moms on popular “makeover shows” and believes if moms take a few extra minutes for themselves in the morning, you can look and feel your best. Not to mention your new-found self confidence will make you a better parent!

Transforming the way you look whether you are a stay-at-home mom or a working mom doesn’t have to be costly or time consuming. Minutes and seconds are precious commodities in our lives and so our sense of fashion needs to fit into overly crammed schedules. Changing small parts of ourselves has the added benefit of boosting moms self-esteem. In fact, recent studies have shown that by changing something positively about the way you look can have a profound effect on a woman’s self esteem. Moms feel better, look better, and are better moms when they take a few minutes to take care of themselves.
Try these time-saving tips to boost your self esteem and instantly transform yourself from frumpy to fabulous!

Get your mommy groove back with new underwear:
“One of the best things women can do to improve their look is to start with the right underwear,” says Rachel LeRoy, author and owner of intimateguide.com. “Visible panty lines make any pants seem out of date.” It’s also important for busy moms to take a moment to find a bra that fits correctly and is comfortable. “The right bra can take years off by lifting breasts to where they should be and giving shirts the right shape,” discloses LeRoy. Got a little “muffin top” or unsightly cellulite on your post-baby body? LeRoy suggests moms invest in a pair of “slimming shape wear” that she says can “take off close to 10 pounds in 2 minutes.” Women in general tend to think about what they wear on the outside more than underneath. “When women update what’s “under there”, it makes a huge difference! ”

Accessorize it:
Make your outfit and personality “pop” by adding a few accessories before you run out of the door in the morning. “Accessories are a great way to add instant flair to any outfit without breaking the budget,” says Nichelle N. Pace, founder and editor of stylemom.com. “Big statement necklaces, bangle bracelets, scarves, and a fantastic pair of pumps are perfect wardrobe enhancements,” she says. But what about the stay-at-home mom who feels trapped in her jeans and sweatpants? Pace has the perfect way to accessorize for her too. “If you’re wearing jeans and a fitted white t-shirt, just add a colorful scarf for instant pop,” she advises. And accessories don’t have to cost you a small fortune. “Chico’s has some great accessories for mom’s on a budget,” says Pace. So go ahead, toss on a scarf or a few bangles, you’ll be glad you did!

Take the 3 minute make-up challenge:
“Makeup can make a big difference,” says Crisit Miller, owner of houppette.com. Miller believes that by taking a few extra minutes in the morning, moms can quickly transform from frumpy to fabulous. “A tinted moisturizer with SPF, concealer, cheek cream blush, Mascara and lip gloss can make a huge difference,” believes Miller. “It will brighten the complexion, get rid if tired eyes and give her a polished look in 3 minutes!” Three minutes? Now that’s a little time most moms can afford in between swigs of coffee and changing dirty diapers.
• Pay attention to your skin tone. Even moms who do apply make up can still have a “washed out” tired-mommy look if they apply the wrong type to their skin. Miller suggests for moms that have redness in their complexions use peach tones for cheeks and lips. For sallow or olive skin, choose pinks! And, “sheer textures for a wash of color will look natural and soft, perfect for everyday and super easy to apply!” The idea is that moms shouldn’t feel overwhelmed when applying make up. A little bit goes a long way.
• Don’t forget to glam-up yourself in seconds with lip gloss. Every mom knows that seconds are precious when you are trying to do a thousand things at once, but make-up artist Patty Bell insists that it doesn’t take much effort to look and feel like a million bucks.”Don’t forget the lip gloss to glam up your “mom-ness,” says Bell. “Rosebud’s strawberry lip balm adds a touch of color and is a great all round moisturizer for lips, nails, hair and skin- another great time saver,” she says. “Any lip gloss instantly brightens your face and smile, giving you a younger look.” Another great perk about lip gloss is that you can apply it just about anywhere so it’s the perfect item to spice-up the look of moms-on-the-go.
• Say good-bye to those dark circles. “Nothing says tired mom like circles under the eyes,” confesses Bell. “Concealer is a mom’s best friend, and another product that can take a few years off.” Bell recommends Yves St.Laurent’s Touche Eclat concealer as it not only conceals dark circles, but also highlights and brightens eyes without appearing cakey.

Shop your closet Swap Parties:
In need of a new mommy wardrobe makeover but don’t want to spend the cash? Then swap your wardrobe instead! Nichelle N. Pace, founder and editor of stylemom.com, has discovered the key to keeping her wardrobe updated and fashion savvy, “Get the wine and cheese, a sitter for the kids, and invite your gal pals over for a swap party,” she says. “Most of us have things in our closet, some even with the tags on it that we haven’t worn or may not like the fit anymore.” Simply send out invitations to your gal pals requesting clothing in good
condition and a variety of sizes. Not only is this a great way to update your look, but it provides moms with a wonderful way to laugh and bond. “Swap parties are a super fun way to not only get a new outfit or item for your wardrobe, but also just another good reason to get together with the gals,” advises Pace.

Keep a “Play dress up” mentality.

...so you want to be a makeup artist?!

I get numerous emails from so many girls, and guys, wanting to be makeup artists.
Many want to know where to start, how I got started, can they shadow me, intern with me, teach them, etc., but my 23 year career did not happen overnight. It's been a long, wonderful, very rewarding career and one that I still cherish and enjoy to this day.

But, before you start, you may need to ask yourself a few questions before taking on such an incredible journey as a makeup artist.

Do you love making others look and feel good?

Do you love to travel, make a lot of money and meet interesting people?

Do you love playing with makeup and creating beautiful new looks?

...those are the plus sides of being a makeup artist. Now consider this:

How about working long hours, nights, weekends, sometimes holidays, and having no set schedule?

Do you like not knowing when your next job, or paycheck may be?

Are you good at promoting yourself to get clients?

...then this may be the job for you!

The best advice I could give is to someone wanting to be a makeup artist is to get your cosmetology license for hair and makeup or check out the fabulous makeup schools such as: Joe Blasco, Westmore Academy or MUD.
My esthetician teacher once gave me the best piece of advice, "the more you know, the more you are worth."

Many schools today have teachers that are actually working in the field today, so their first hand knowledge really adds to the curriculum. There you can learn the basic fundamentals of makeup application, prosthetics, special effects, and so much more.

And in todays economy, with most major companies cutting back, his advice is still holds true to this day.

There are very few openings as full time makeup artists with television studios or production companies these days, and the ones who are there value their positions and are the best in the industry, or they wouldn't be there!

The majority of makeup artists work freelance, that means working for several companies, as an independent contractor, throughout the course of your career.
It also means being "on call", 24/7, whenever a production needs you, the call goes out to find a makeup artist, ASAP... and more often than not, whoever answers the call first, gets the job.
As a freelancer, that means, you must be willing & able to accept any job that comes along if you want to get paid, or eat!

There are no benefits, sick days or paid vacations being a freelance makeup artist. You pay your own health insurance, and find your own clients, find a replacement if you are ill...quite simply, if you don't work, you don't get paid.

But when you do work, those jobs can be very exciting.

It's best to have a portfolio, or photos of your work, if you want to get hired or have an agent. They need to see what your makeup skills look like in print in order to hire you.

If you don't have one, find yourself a reputable fashion or commercial photographer in town, and offer your services in exchange for pictures for your portfolio.

You will have to do a lot of volunteering and assisting at first just to build up your resume.

I also suggest working in the department stores, or a hair salon, to develop your skills. There you have unlimited access to make up different faces on a daily basis. You can also begin to build your makeup kit as most companies offer gratis to their employees, as well as training.

Work can also be found by calling the television & local cable stations, newspapers, magazines & local film office, and volunteering your services. But, most companies have their steady artists that they call upon regularly, so getting hired right away can often be very difficult.

There are always job postings on Craigslist looking for makeup artists for independent films. They usually don't pay, but it's a good way to break into the film business and get your name in the credits.

Once you establish your name in the industry, that is just the beginning. You must form good solid and trusting relationships with your clients to keep them returning.

There is no room for mediocrity, and sloppy makeup application- you must strive to be your absolute best, on every job, as only the strong survive in this highly competitive market.

That means not only being the best makeup artist, but: arriving on time, having a clean, organized makeup kit, avoiding gossip, and knowing on set etiquette and being able to deal with talent of all backgrounds, races, religions, sexes, political parties and respecting their individual opinions and privacy.
It also goes without saying, but one MUST have: a cell phone, computer, printer & a car these days as many job details are sent via email and even text. (NYC is one of the few places that you won't need a car to get around town).

Remember, you are hired because of a specialized skill and unique talent that you bring to the production, and one that involves not only makeup, but making the talent feel comfortable and at ease as you are the first one they meet.
Honor this profession, and remember the Max Factor's, and George Westmore's of the world who have paved the way for all of us to continue to strive and excel in one of the best jobs in all of show biz.

Easy Ways to Maintain a Holiday Glow...no matter how tired you are!

It’s mid-December, which means the holiday rush is in full swing, most are struggling to meet end-of-year deadlines at work, and there are holiday parties a plenty. This all translates to long days (and nights), which bring dark circles, dull skin and an abundance of other beauty issues. The good news is you can still look radiant and refreshed with less sleep than usual, thanks to these tips from celebrity makeup artists and beauty experts across the country.

Hydrate
Hydration is key. Drink the requisite eight glasses of water a day and switch to a heavier moisturizer. Dr. Brooke Jackson, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of The Skin Wellness Center of Chicago, suggests minimizing use of products containing retinoids and alpha hydroxy acids as they can be too drying in the winter. She also cautions that drinking red wine while on certain medications can cause skin irritation, so monitor your alcohol intake and changes in your skin.

Exfoliate
Removing dead skin cells gives tired, dry skin a glow. Concoct a homemade mask, massage into your skin using a circular motion, and rinse clean. For oily skin, mix lemon juice and a little salt. Be careful with the amount of salt you use; the mask should be grainy, but not too harsh on your skin. If your skin is normal or on the dry side, combine honey and sugar.

If you don’t have time for a mask, grab some leftover gin from the holiday festivities. Narine Nikogosian, one of Los Angeles’ best-known skin care experts (her client list includes Jessica Alba and Charlize Theron) and author of Return to Beauty: Old-World Recipes for Great Radiant Skin (Atria Books, November 2009), suggests this unexpected recipe. Mix two tablespoons of gin with a quarter-cup of tonic water to quickly balance and tone oily skin laden with last night’s makeup.

Illuminate your skin
Brighten skin with products designed to do just that. Celebrity makeup artist Chris Lanston, who has worked with Kristin Davis and Miss USA among many others, suggests mixing a face lotion containing mica with your foundation to make skin glow. Brush on a light dusting of pale peach or pink blush. A little blush goes a long way on a tired, pale face!

As a finishing touch, opt for finishing powder. “Translucent powder can create a cakey-white look. Blot with finishing powder, which will brighten under the eyes, highlight certain areas, absorb oil and minimize fine lines,” says Christopher Drummond, an esthetician and makeup artist who has worked with celebrities including Jennifer Lopez, January Jones and Kimora Lee Simmons.

Try Christopher Drummond Beauty Finale Finishing Powder, part of Drummond’s 100 percent natural, vegan and organic-based beauty line. Another great product that gets the job done: La Prairie Cellular Treatment Illuminating Face Powder, which contains a light-diffusing polymer that gives skin an ethereal appearance.

Enhance eyes
Take just a few minutes to concentrate on your eyes. They're the focal point of your face, so banishing puffiness, hiding circles, and brightening them will make you look much more awake. Reduce puffiness by applying cool green or chamomile tea bags (keep some in the refrigerator) to your eyes when you wake up. Both will soothe, and green tea contains antioxidants that help minimize swelling, says Dr. Jackson. To counteract fluid build-up before bedtime (if you're lucky enough to catch some Zs), prop up your pillows so your head is slightly elevated as you sleep.

Mask dark circles with a lightweight concealer. Patty Bell, film/television makeup artist and owner of On Location Hair and Makeup in Pittsburgh, suggests picking a yellow-based one that will counteract the purple shadows under eyes. Dab a small amount under your eyes and smooth with your finger. Your body temperature will blend the makeup better than a brush.

Bell is a fan of Yves Saint Laurent’s Touche Eclat Radiant Touch. “It’s a staple in my makeup kit,” says Bell. “It highlights and brightens the under eye area without ever looking dry or cakey. One news anchor I use it on calls it her liquid gold!” Lanston swears by Benefit’s thick boi-ing “industrial-strength” concealer. “It’s magic!”
Next, rim the lower inner corners of your eyes with a white eye pencil. It reflects the white of your eyes, making them look brighter. Another option: Celebrity makeup artist Mally Roncal suggests a dab of soft, shimmery white eye shadow on the inner corner of your eyes. Try the Mally Beauty Lightwand Eye Brightener to fake those eight hours of sleep.
Finish with a coat or two of mascara to give the appearance of bigger, more alert eyes. “Brighten the whites of your eyes with navy mascara,” says Bell. “Avoid mascara on the bottom lashes. It may cause shadows under the eyes, only accentuating dark circles. And if you’re going to wear eye shadow, avoid pinks and purples, which make eyes look tired and red.”
Get physical
One of the best beauty tricks around, exercise boosts blood flow and pumps water throughout your system, resulting in a healthy glow. A mere 10 minutes of brisk physical activity will increase your energy level for up to two hours. Take the time to walk around your neighborhood, run up and down your stairs, jump rope, or bicycle, and you'll feel and see the difference.
Only have a couple minutes? Try this yoga trick, taught to acclaimed yoga instructor and Connecticut resident Khadi Madama by her yoga teacher. “This pose instantly revives a complexion,” said Khadi. “It brings the circulation back into the face to give it a nice glow, and my teacher claimed it could even alleviate wrinkles.”

To practice the Standing Cow Pose, slowly bend forward from the waist for 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Let your shoulders, neck and head go limp. Breathe deeply, letting out tension. Slowly stand back up, keeping your knees slightly bent to avert lower back strain.

My wedding season is winding down and this wedding on 10/24/09, was one to be remembered!
I did the brides' sister's makeup for her wedding many years ago, so it was quite an honor to be asked back again by the family.
Once again, another gorgeous bride to work with, one so pretty she could actually model!
My assistant, Rachel, and I arrived at the brides home in Fox Chapel and had so much fun getting Colleen, her family and 8 bridesmaids ready for the big day.
I then proceeded to the church and on to the reception at the Fox Chapel Golf Club to keep her looking fresh and beautiful for her photos taken by photojournalist, Jeff Swensen.
Colleen looked spectacular, as did her groom, Henry Simonds, grandson of Elsie & Henry Hillman.

Beauty tips for the sleep deprived!

I am always amazed at the female news anchors and reporters who always look so fresh, happy and awake at 5:00 in the morning...how do they do it?!
I asked a few friends of mine from the local news stations to give me some of their early morning beauty tips.
Michelle Wright of WTAE TV, says, "I get enough sleep & water and love Joe Blasco foundation and cover up and Mac blush and eye shadows".
WPXI's reporter, Cara Sapaida, begins her day very, very early.
"Getting extra sleep, even a few minutes, a few days a week is key. For that I invest in a good dry shampoo. That way I don't have to wash my hair every morning. Some people swear by it and use it on day three as well! I'm not one of those gals. There's a new shampoo by TIGI called Rockaholic Dirty Secret Dry Shampoo. I also like good eye cream though for sure. And lately i've been using Hope in a Tube by Philosophy. My favorite tip is a nice, hot cup of coffee. When all else fails, I can count on THAT!"

As a film and television makeup artist, my job is to make actors look their very best first thing in the morning, often with crew calls starting at 4:30 am, so I, too, have created a list of beauty products to help you look & achieve your very best, too!

The key to looking fresh in the early morning is to wear bright colors!
Add colors like pink, corals, reds & blue...they instantly perk up your skin. You want to avoid, greys, black, khakis, beiges and browns, those colors will make your skin appear lack luster & dull.

Your skin also needs perked up in the morning, so get your circulation going by gently exfoliating your skin.
I love Queen Helene mint julep scrub, to wake up your skin.
You can also try good 'ole baking soda, it's pure natural & very cheap. Just keep a box in your shower & mix a tablespoon in your hand with a few drops of water, and any excess can be worked through your hair to remove excess hairspray build up.

While your at it in the shower, try some Caffeinated soap from ThinkGeek.com and follow with a final blast of ice cold water to add shine to your hair and really wake you up!

The next step is to work on the eyes, first thing we do is add eye drops!
Many actors I work with swear by Collyre Blue eye drop to make the whites appear their absolute whitest.

Your other best friend is to invest in a good eye cream, find something cooling, firming and smoothing.
I like YSL's contour eye cream.
Many eye creams now have caffeine in them which is said to perk up the eye area.
Another less expensive, but effective eye cream is, from 100 percent Pure, check out their 100 percent organic caffeine eye cream!

Curling the eyelashes instantly opens the eyes up & makes them appear larger.
The best eyelash curler on the market is: Shu Uemera. It's a little more expensive than drugstore eyelash curlers, but so worth every penny! The wider curler fits the eye shape better and gently curves the lashes and doesn't bend them in half.

Mascara is another way to appear more awake.
After curling your lashes, apply two coats of navy mascara to make the whites appear brighter and more awake.
Concentrate on adding more mascara to the outer lashes to make the eyes appear more open, and cat like!
I like Lumene blue mascara:
...or if you're really looking for some eye popping fun, try Dior's Azure blue mascara- the brightest blue around!

Eyeliners should also be deep navy or blue to make the whites look their whitest. You want to avoid any purples, khaki's or brown eyeliners on a sleepless night. Those colors will only accentuate under eye circles.
I like MAC's Navy stain Powerpoint liner, it's one of the best! The color is not too bright but also has a hint of metallic that will also make your eyes sparkle in the early morning.
The formula is long lasting, and waterproof but glides on effortlessly.

Avoid any eyeshadows with pink or purple that day, especially on the lid.
Any colors with red undertones applied on the lid or close to the lash line will make your eyes appear red, tired and puffy looking like you've been crying all night.
Add a touch of sparkle to the lid by applying a waterproof, creaseproof creme shadow such as Laura Mercier's Platinum Metallic eye color:

And finally, the most important, and our BFF, is... under eye concealer!
I cannot live without YSL's Touche Eclat for an instant pick me up, anytime; it is the best beauty product on the market today! It highlights under the eye without ever looking cakey.
If you need a little more coverage that day, look for products that have yellow undertones to help counteract the purpleness under your eyes.
I also use a lot of MAC's studio finish concealer for television- works great!

Blush is another way to appear more awake!
Sometimes, sleepless nights require a little more blush to make you look refreshed & alive!
My all time favorite is:
NARS orgasm blush- it's a very flattering pinky coral blush with soft golden highlkights that look great on just about everyone!

Lip color is a must!
This will always make you look your very best in the early morning,
Avoid beige, matte tones that will blend into your skin.
Clear reds and soft pinky coral tones will brighten your tired skin, as does a little lip gloss!
I like Benefit's tinted lip balm, a great shade that works for all skin tones.
...And if you really need that extra pick me up, try:
Smashbox's caffeine laced lip pencil!
or how about a caffeinated lip balm to keep you awake?!

And, finish your look with a dust of a pink powder, which helps brighten the skin.
T LeClerc makes the finest powder out there, it's used by many models and makeup artists.
Their Orchidee pink veil powder perks up all skin!

These tips only mask a sleep deprived face, naturally, your best bet is to get 8 hours of sleep, exercise 30 minutes a day, and drink 8 glasses of water to hydrate & plump your skin, but with a lot of us creative night owls, who has time to sleep?!
...sometimes life gets in the way of beauty, bring on daylight savings time!

Fall Beauty Tips for 2009

With fall now upon us it's time to re-think our makeup & beauty routine.

Lips:

Lips tend to be a bit dryer now, so time to get out the lip balm & lose the bright pinks & corals from summer and switch to the cooler shades of plums, berries and deep reds for this fall.
For lip balms, I have a ton of them but I always turn to cherry Chapstick when my lips are their driest...it's economical, leaves just a touch of color on the lips, and it tastes great, too!

Purples, blood reds and almost black are huge shades for fall lip colors.
With vampires making their comeback in the media, makeup has reflected those changes. Think, pale skin, dark glossy cherry stained lips & plum shadows....that's your fall face, though they might not look best on everyone.
If you don't want to appear too ghoulish, try a sheer deep lip gloss, and keep your eye makeup neutral.
And... I must not forget one of my all time favorite lipliners, Chanel's Nude for autumn, but if you're looking to save some money, I suggest #666 (how appropriate for fall) lip liner from Wet 'N Wild which is almost identical & .99 cents!

Eyes

The smoky eye is back with a vengeance!
Black, greys, silvers & purple shadows are all the rage, as are false eyelashes!
It's time to make the switch to deep plums, liners, shadows & mascara.
Luckily, these shades look best on everyone, and they can be found everywhere right now.
Ditch the spring peachey colors and reach for the deep rust shades, and put aside your lime greens of summer and replace them with emerald greens & khaki's and the yellows with gold.
Think fall leaves, golds, reds, deep browns, greens...those colors work best in your makeup palette now.

Foundation

With fall, the skin needs a little more protection from the elements & also a little more moisture.
I do believe that the one beauty investment women should make, should be a foundation that matches your skin tone perfectly. This may take some trial and error until you find the right one. My own personal favorites for flawless skin include: Chanel, Laura Mercier & Armani.
But...If you are looking to save money, and like a little more coverage, I also love Revlon's Colorstay foundation. We've used it a lot in film and television, and the formula is very long lasting.

Skin also gets a little drier with the change of seasons, so sometimes it's necessary to switch foundations and add something with a little more moisture for this time of year.
I tend to like products that save time, especially in the morning, and tinted moisturizers do that for me. If you prefer a sheerer coverage in your foundation, you can either mix your current foundation with a few drops of moisturizer or just try one of my personal favorites, Laura Mercier's tinted moisturizer- it's a moisturizer, foundation & sunscreen all in one.
Another trick to get the most mileage out of your foundation is to add a primer under your foundation to help your makeup stay on longer, glide on easier, & minimize pores and oil.
A good one is:
Cargo HD primer- which adds a touch of color to the skin as well.
And, remember, just because it's fall...you still need to use a SPF. Those rays may be a little further away, but they can still cause sun damage.

Nails

An instant wardrobe update for everyone of all ages this fall is to deepen your nail color....for less than 10.00 you can be instantly in style this fall!
Look for navy, purple, mahogany, wines & blacks.
My favorites are from OPI...I love the staying power & shine of these colors, not to mention their great names, but any great drugstore shade will do the trick!

Skin

Drier skin means one word...exfoliation!
You do not have to spend a lot of money on exfoliators when all you have to do is open your kitchen cupboard!
Reach for that box of Arm & Hammer baking soda & make a paste out of it using either water or witch hazel & gently scrub your skin.
It is one of the most economical products on the market & also the purest for skin.
Besides cleaning your skin, it can also be used to brush your teeth, remove hairspray build up and freshen your laundry!
Keep a box in your shower, and when your done beautifying yourself...scrub down your shower walls & floors, as baking soda is one of the greenest cleansers around!

...In summary, fall makeup is rich, deep, vibrant colors which may or may not work for everyone, but the key is to play up your best feature and add one or two new products to bring your current makeup routine up to fashion.
Your little black dress for fall may only need a fun nail polish, deep plum liner and lip gloss to bring your look up to date.
Makeup is fall's best kept secret accessory!

It's October... one of my busiest bridal months!
Yesterday, I spent the day with another gorgeous bride, Bridget & her lovely family.
The morning was spent getting ready at her beautiful home in Allison Park, and then proceeded to St. Paul Cathedral for her ceremony and finally on to the Carnegie Museum for her reception.

Bridget is a natural beauty already, and only needed a small amount of makeup to enhance her natural good looks...I just gave her complexion a little boost with a touch of foundation from Makeup Forever, some blush from Chanel, and set it all with one of the best face powders on the market, Visiora. Local Makeup Artist Brings Experience To G-20

PITTSBURGH -- This month’s G-20 Summit promises to provide politics, protests and plenty of paparazzi.
But, who will keep global dignitaries and international reporters looking their best?
Pittsburgh freelance makeup artist, Patty Bell.
Bell, a 20 year TV and film makeup veteran, was contacted by German News Network ARD to provide make up for its news anchors.

“My other concern was that I am working for a German TV station, so would there be a language barrier?” pondered Bell. “But all of the anchors speak English and German.”
Bell said she has worked in tight security situations before, having many of her makeup kits searched, but she found getting credentials for working the G-20 an arduous task.
“I basically had to give my life away to work on this G-20,” she said.
But security and communication are not Bell’s biggest issues with the freelance gig.
“My biggest concern is getting there,” Bell said. “I am thinking I will allow myself an hour to get there, and I only live seven minutes from Downtown Pittsburgh.”
Although Bell’s transportation concerns are uncertain, her job once she enters the convention is clear.
The German news station sill set up two rooms to occupy their anchor desk.

...what if film crews ran the world?

This has definitely been one of my favorite commercials this year, but my only complaint, because I have worked on thousands of commercials over the past 20 years is....they forgot to call "last looks" on the bride before she walked down the aisle!

On every film set around the world, makeup, hair and wardrobe are called upon at the very last minute to do a final check before the actor appears on camera.
It is the trained eye of that artist to perfect and correct any imperfection they see, such as: shine, a mascara fleck, a hair out of place, and the dreaded...lipstick on the teeth! No one is perfect...not even actors, but it is the job of the makeup artist to achieve that goal.

Many actors become friends with their makeup artists as they trust their keen eye to assure them that they look their absolute best, at all times, whether it's on the big screen, red carpet or a magazine cover. You can guarantee that behind every big celebrity is a well paid makeup artist who worked an hour or so on her face!

We are trained to fix, correct, repair and beautify, sometimes all in a matter of seconds, and it all gets magnified on the big screen for the world to see!

I salute the makeup artists of the film world, who work, round the clock, day or night, in sickness and in health, in strange locations, and weather conditions, tirelessly making their actors beautiful, (or grotesque), day after day...only for the world to see their name go flying by for a split second, in a tiny credit on the big screen!

...If the world were ruled by makeup artists...it would be such a beautiful place to live:)

I was recently interviewed by Leann Sabato, of Cosmetiholic.com, regarding makeup for the mature woman.
It was an honor to be a part of her makeup artist Monday blog!

"Aging isn't easy and makeup can either make you look older, or turn back the years. Award-winning, celebrity makeup artist Patty Bell gives us the low down on how makeup can help or hurt, and how to take 10 years off in an instant.

What are the makeup rules for aging skin?
As women mature, the "less is more" rule, really applies here! All those years of sun worshipping really does catch up to you eventually, so this is the time to: add a night cream to your skin care routine; stop smoking; stay out of the sun; eat healthy; exercise drink lots of water; and ease up on the foundation,powder and heavy eyeshadows!

How can women avoid crepy skin, caused by foundation and powder?
Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! Some foundations and powders can actually make the skin look older by settling in the fine lines. You want to look for a light, moisturizing foundation with sunscreen, and skip the powder altogether.
For daytime, I would suggest a tinted moisturizer. I have found that some of the mineral foundations look chalky and shiny on mature skin, so I never recommend them to my older clients, and avoid heavily frosted eyeshadows and bronzers as they will only draw attention to the crepiness. And never, ever use pancake makeup - save that for the morticians!

What makeup changes should a woman make when she begins to notice fine lines?
When you first start to notice fine lines, I would suggest using a Retin A cream at night, drink lots of H2O, exfoliate your skin and look for any moisturizers with Hyaluronic acid in it, which plumps up the skin by attracting water And most importantly, wear sunscreen!
Be conscientious as to where your lines are occuring: Sometimes women get lines on their upper forehead from applying mascara, sometimes they are from smiling (which is okay & completely natural) and sometimes the lines are from sleeping on your side. Many times the lines around the mouth & lips, may be from smoking. But remember that aging is a natural process and It's best to just own those lines...you earned them!

What makeup tips/trends make women look older?
Too much makeup instantly makes a woman look older. Very dark lips, tons of mascara, pancake makeup, black eyeliner, blue eyeshadow, and frosty pink lipstick can instantly age and date you. Today's makeup should be fresh & clean...regardless of your age! One should never hide behind their makeup, like a mask.

What makeup tips/trends make women look younger?
Sometimes the subtlest changes can make all the difference in a woman's face, and take off 5-10 years without surgery. As we age, our eyes tend to droop, our lashes and lips become thinner, our skin loses elasticity, our eyes lose their vibrancy & our teeth fade...but have no fear, makeup can cure everything!
A little concealer such as YSL Touche Eclat ($40, ysl.com can instantly brighten and lift the under eye circles.
An eyelash curler such as Shu Uemura's can instantly open up the eyes.
A touch of Visine, and some navy mascara will brighten your eyes and instantly refresh you.
Cream blush like Stila's convertible colors are a great way to add a pop of color to your face, without looking heavy.
Individual eyelashes such as Ardell's can add a touch of glamour to your look and are very inexpensive way to take off 10 years!
Finally...look into teeth whitening. Who wants to look at yellow, stained teeth?
These tips can work for all ages, and they are a lot cheaper than a face lift!

What is your favorite foundation for mature skin?
Airbrushing really looks beautiful on mature skin, but that's not always an option for the every day woman.My all time favorite foundation for mature skin is Visiora. This foundation seems to melt right into the skin & blend perfectly. It is used on a lot of films by every top makeup artist in Hollywood & is virtually undetectable on those big close ups, and it just leaves flawless looking skin. I am also a big fan of Laura Mercier and Chanel foundations."

The importance of Trial Runs!

I was inspired by the fabulous wedding planner, Sumer Schmitt, of Simply Perfect Weddings to write about the significance of having a trial run for your makeup and hair style for your wedding day.
On movie sets it is called a screen test, an actor never goes on the big screen without trying different makeup looks for that character...same thing in the wedding world, it is called a "trial run", both are extremely important when it comes to you looking your very best as you star in the biggest production of your life...your wedding day!

On this one day in your life, you get one shot (hopefully) to look the best you ever did and, this is not the day to experiment with new hairstyles, or makeup colors that you have never worn before.
This is the day you want to look like you...only a touch more glamorous!

Here are a few tips that every bride should think of when hiring a professional makeup artist:

Remember that you are interviewing the makeup artist, and hair stylist as well. You two will be working together very closely & it is very important that your personalities get along, especially the day of your wedding.

Most artists charge for trial runs, so make sure that fee is discussed ahead of time...after all, their time is valuable. Plan on at least 90 minutes.

Your artist should be prompt, professional & very calming to be around.

Never hire someone without seeing their work. Ask to see a portfolio or photos of their work, and ask how long they have been in business.

Experienced artists know the importance of working fast, following a schedule & being cordial to other vendors involved.

Ask for testimonials of former clients.

Get a trial run at least 3-4 months before your wedding.

Make sure you are done tanning when you go in for your makeup trial.

Mention any & all product allergies at your trial run, and if you are on any medications.

Bring along your current makeup so we can see what routine you are used to doing. It is okay to use your own products!

Never feel pressured into trying new colors or buying anything...this is your day!

Be open to new suggestions to enhance your features for your photos, sometimes your every day makeup, and colors, do not work well for photography.

Bring along "tear sheets" of some makeup looks that you like.

Make sure you have a waterproof mascara!

Do not get a facial close to your wedding date. Some facials are meant to draw out impurities in the skin which can cause breakouts.

Make sure your artist takes photos of your new look and writes down all the colors they used on you, so they can duplicate that exact look on your wedding day, so there will be no surprises!

Coordinate your makeup and hair time with your wedding planner- you never want your hairstyle or makeup application to be rushed the day of your wedding. Plan on at least an hour for both.

Check your finished application in 3 way mirrors, and outdoor lighting. You want to make sure you look good in all angles,and lighting!

Think about adding individual eyelashes or a strip lash for an elegant look. I've seen eyelashes make women look 10 years younger!

It is very nice to see the entire bridal party perfectly made up for your bridal photos, and don't forget the mothers of the bride & groom...it is their big day, too!

If you do like the artist & agree to hire them, ask for a contract, and discuss what it will take to reserve their services for you, many require a deposit, and some are non refundable.

And finally....makeup can always wash off, so if they don't get it right the first time, they try again, until YOU are happy...that's why it is called a trial! You try different looks until you get that picture perfect look that is just right for you!

Remember...that wedding photos last a lifetime and you want to make sure that the money invested in professional makeup artists & hairstyling is money well spent.

Photographer Archie Carpenter, and model/stylist Karen Goss generously donated their time, and talents to help their girls look, and feel their absolute best and have a fun time doing it!
In addition to a skin care class, and makeup application, manicure and a pizza party...the girls got to experience a real photo shoot, complete with a modeling lesson, designer wardrobe, wigs & platforms shoes!
A good time was had by all!!
